Fiji Faces Alarming Suicide Trends: A Call for Change

The Fiji Police Force has reported 63 suicide cases for the year 2024 up to August 22, a slight decrease from 66 cases during the same period last year. Additionally, there were 44 attempted suicide cases recorded, down from 47 in the previous year.

Among the reported cases, eight suicides and five attempted suicides involved individuals under the age of 18. The highest number of incidents was seen in those aged over 60, with 19 suicides and two attempted suicides.

A significant disparity was also noted, as males accounted for 50 of the reported suicide cases. Acting Commissioner of Police Sakeo Raikaci expressed concern over these statistics, emphasizing the need for a culture of acceptance and understanding in society, especially given the social issues currently facing the nation.

ACP Raikaci urged community leaders to play a role in shifting the narrative around mental health and suicide. He stressed the importance of creating supportive environments where people can freely discuss their problems, particularly in light of challenges like cyberbullying that affect the community.

Factors contributing to the incidents of suicide and attempted suicide have been associated with spousal disputes, family conflicts, relationship issues, stress, and illness. The theme for World Suicide Prevention Day 2024 is “Changing the Narrative with the Call to Start the Conversation.”
