Fiji Faces Alarming Suicide Rates: A Call for Change

Between 2016 and 2021, the Fiji Police Force recorded a total of 1,276 cases of suicide and attempted suicide. This translates to an average of 212 cases annually, with approximately half resulting in death.

Minister for Health and Medical Services Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu made this statement in Parliament on Friday while responding to inquiries about the ministry’s suicide prevention efforts.

Dr. Lalabalavu noted that the year 2019 saw the highest incidence of suicide and attempts, totaling 244 cases, with the Western Division consistently reporting the most incidents over the six-year span.

He emphasized the importance of changing the narrative surrounding suicide, advocating for a shift away from silence and stigma toward a culture of openness, understanding, and support. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), around 800,000 individuals die by suicide globally each year.

Dr. Lalabalavu encouraged the public to engage in discussions about suicide and prevention, remarking that every conversation, regardless of its scale, can aid in fostering a supportive and understanding society.

He urged communities, including churches, mosques, sporting venues, and social gatherings, to initiate these important conversations to break down barriers, raise awareness, and cultivate supportive environments.
