Fiji Faces Alarming Suicide Rates: A Call for Change

Between 2016 and 2021, the Fiji Police Force documented a total of 1,276 suicides and attempted suicides. This equates to an average of 212 cases annually, with approximately half resulting in death.

Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu, the Minister for Health and Medical Services, brought attention to these statistics during a parliamentary session on Friday while responding to questions about the ministry’s suicide prevention initiatives.

He noted that 2019 saw the highest number of recorded suicides and attempts, totaling 244 cases, and the Western Division had consistently logged the most incidents over the past six years.

Dr. Lalabalavu emphasized the need to change the narrative surrounding suicide, advocating for a transformation in how society perceives this complex issue. He called for a shift from a culture of silence and stigma to one characterized by openness, understanding, and support.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 800,000 people worldwide take their own lives annually.

The minister urged individuals to engage in conversations about suicide and its prevention, stressing that every discussion contributes to fostering a supportive, understanding community.

“By initiating these essential conversations, we can dismantle barriers, raise awareness, and cultivate better support systems,” he stated. He encouraged people to start these discussions in various settings, including churches, mosques, sports fields, and social gatherings.
