Fiji Faces Alarming Spike in Suicide Cases: What’s Behind the Numbers?

The Fiji Police Force has reported 63 suicide cases for 2024 so far, which is a slight decrease from 66 cases during the same period last year. Additionally, there have been 44 attempted suicides compared to 47 for the same timeframe.

These statistics cover the period from January 1 to August 22. Among these cases, there were eight suicides and five attempted suicides involving individuals under 18 years old. The age group over 60 reported the highest numbers, with 19 suicides and two attempts.

There is also a notable trend showing a higher incidence of suicide among males, with 50 cases recorded. Acting Commissioner of Police Sakeo Raikaci expressed deep concern over these statistics, emphasizing the need for a culture of acceptance and understanding to address the growing social issues faced by society.

ACP Raikaci appealed to community leaders to help shift the conversation surrounding these issues. He stated, “We need to nurture a more understanding and supportive culture of acceptance and create safe spaces to talk. As we address modern policing challenges, cyberbullying has emerged as another critical issue, and we urge Fijians to show greater care, even online.”

Contributing factors identified in the suicide and attempted suicide cases include spousal and family disputes, relationship issues, stress, and health concerns. The theme for World Suicide Prevention Day 2024 is “Changing the Narrative with the Call to Start the Conversation.”
