Fiji Engineer Faces Corruption Charges in Court

The Magistrates Court has determined that Mohammed Shafraaz Ali, a former senior engineer with the Water Authority of Fiji, must answer to charges related to corruption. The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption has charged him with one count of bribery.

The allegations state that between March 1 and June 30, 2017, while serving as the Regional Engineer Bulk at WAF, Ali accepted an advantage in the form of a return air ticket worth $1430.60 from Fiji Airways to Sydney, Australia. Sphynx Solutions Pte Limited provided this advantage to Ali on March 21, 2017, for actions performed within his role as a public servant.

Resident Magistrate Jeremaia Savou considered the arguments presented by both sides before concluding that there is a sufficient case against Ali regarding the bribery charge. The defense counsel requested additional time to gather further instructions from Ali to clarify the next steps. The case has been postponed until September 19 for further mention.
