Fiji Education Under Fire: Corruption Investigations Launched

The Ministry of Education in Fiji has submitted allegations of fund misappropriation in several schools to the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC).

These allegations relate to educational institutions that received funding for projects but did not provide receipts or failed to complete the projects.

Ilisoni Waqa, Principal Education Officer at the Ministry’s Assets and Infrastructure Services, stated, “We have referred cases for audit, and FICAC is conducting interviews and requesting documents. We are assisting them by supplying the evidence needed to support their investigations.”

When questioned about the specific number of schools involved, Waqa replied that he did not have that information at hand but would follow up. He also withheld details regarding the particular schools involved in the cases.

At Nasoki Village, a request was made for assistance in completing a double-storey classroom. Waqa confirmed that help was provided, but the school did not submit any receipts as proof of expenditure.

He underscored the need for responsible management of government funds and proper documentation. “When funds are allocated to schools, we expect them to be used for their intended purposes. Schools that maintain accurate records stand a better chance of receiving funding for future projects,” he stated. Waqa encouraged all schools to keep comprehensive records of receipts for any funds used for projects.
