Fiji Education Minister Addresses Teacher Unions’ Pay Increase Demands

Education Minister Aseri Radrodro has announced that ongoing discussions are being held between the ministry, the Fiji Teachers Union, and the Fijian Teachers Association concerning the 30 percent pay increase requested by teachers.

Teachers continue to express their dissatisfaction with the 10 percent budget allocation, a decision that has not been well-received by the two unions.

Minister Radrodro has urged teachers to “appreciate what has been allocated in the annual budget” as the discussions move forward.

“Specifically, I have been informed that discussions are ongoing regarding the issues they are raising, with our permanent secretary, and I am yet to receive an update on the progress of these discussions,” he stated.

“I would also like to take this opportunity to request the two teacher unions to appreciate the annual budget allocation. At the same time, I encourage further discussions and collaborations to address the issues they are raising, taking into consideration the perspectives of both the ministry and the Government.”
