The Fiji Police’s M-PAiSA task force has made significant strides in combating financial fraud by charging two individuals with financial deception via the mobile money transfer app. The accused, a 29-year-old man and a 37-year-old woman, are said to have orchestrated a rental car scam that involved posting fake rental listings on Facebook.
On September 17, they allegedly used multiple social media accounts to promote rental cars, instructing victims to send payments through M-PAiSA. One such victim, a resident of Nadi, sent $190 to the provided mobile number but soon discovered he had been hoodwinked when he was unable to contact the accused. This prompted him to report the incident to the Nadi Police Station.
As a result of their actions, both suspects have been charged with Obtaining Financial Advantage by Deception and Dishonestly Dealing with Personal Financial Information. They are scheduled to appear in court at the Nasinu Magistrates Court today.
This incident highlights the importance of vigilance when using online platforms for transactions, reminding users to thoroughly verify the legitimacy of offers and providers. However, the prompt actions taken by law enforcement demonstrate a commitment to protecting citizens and tackling fraud, fostering hope for safer digital transactions in the future.
In summary, the case illustrates the ongoing efforts to combat financial scams and underscores the role of community awareness in preventing similar incidents.
