Fiji Day in Geneva: Unity and Celebration Among Diaspora

A delegation from the Fijian Parliament, led by Speaker Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, participated in the Fiji Day celebrations at the Fiji House last night. The event gathered members of the Fijian community in Geneva, including several Fijian rugby players and their families who traveled from France.

The Speaker expressed gratitude to Luke Daunivalu, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Fiji to Switzerland and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office and other International Organisations in Geneva, for organizing the occasion that brought Fijian families and friends together to honor this significant day.

During the event, Alitia Bainivalu, the Minister for Fisheries and Forests, emphasized the importance of unity and progress in Fiji, urging the diaspora to foster peaceful coexistence and put aside differences.

She highlighted the recent tabling of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Bill 2024 in Parliament by the Prime Minister, noting that the government will later determine its progression through the necessary readings.

The Minister also encouraged attendees to strengthen existing bonds and heal fractured relationships as they commemorated Fiji Day. A discussion session, referred to as a ‘talanoa’, took place with the diaspora prior to the cake cutting ceremony.

The delegation is in Geneva for the 149th Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly, which commenced with registrations yesterday. Speaker Lalabalavu is expected to address attendees later this week, while Leader of the Opposition Inia Seruiratu will chair a meeting for Small Islands Developing States scheduled for Monday during the Assembly.
