In celebration of Fiji Day, market vendors in Suva donned blue attire to mark the 54th anniversary of the nation’s independence. Tourists arriving at the Suva Port via cruise ships participated in the festivities, dancing and enjoying the entertainment provided.
During the event, Suva City Council chair Tevita Boseiwaqa highlighted the council’s collaboration with stakeholders and the government to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), emphasizing the importance of ensuring that no Fijian is left behind.
“We aim to foster collaboration, as independence signifies unity for us,” Mr. Boseiwaqa stated. “That’s why we chose to celebrate here at the Suva Market, engaging with the grassroots community.”
Ilisapeci Viriki, the general secretary of the Suva United Market Vendor Association, expressed gratitude to the SCC for financing the event. She noted that despite the last-minute planning, the council’s assistance allowed them to successfully organize the decorations and live entertainment.
The main celebrations for Fiji Day are scheduled to take place at Subrail Park in Labasa, with President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere officiating the event.
