Fiji Day Festivities: A Grand Celebration Awaits in Labasa!

The national celebration of Fiji Day is set to take place on Thursday at Subrail Park in Labasa, with preparations well underway as both the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) and the Fiji Navy conduct mock drills. Over 100 officers participated in these drills yesterday, which included the firing of ceremonial gunshots and singing the national anthem at the venue. Minor inspections of the floodlights were also conducted, and additional devices were installed by personnel.

Senior Superintendent of Police Kemueli Baledrokadroka, the Divisional Police Commander for the North, confirmed that security arrangements for the upcoming celebration are on schedule. Samuela Ligairi, the special administrator for Labasa Town Council, expressed optimism about the event, noting that Fiji flags will be displayed at each corner of the Central Business District starting today to mark 54 years of independence. Ligairi aims for the celebration to surpass the previous one held in Labasa in 2018.

Paul Jaduram, president of the Macuata Tourism Association, emphasized that the celebration is an excellent opportunity for Labasa to demonstrate its hospitality and promote itself as an emerging destination. Commissioner Northern, Uraia Rainima, encouraged community participation, highlighting a march that will commence at Y-Corner at 6:30 AM on the day of the event.

Additionally, Ligairi mentioned that a national reconciliation program would be included in the Fiji Day festivities, with Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka and President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere expected to attend. He underscored the importance of such celebrations in fostering reconciliation between Indo-Fijians and iTaukei communities and urged the people of the North to take part in this significant national event.
