The Vodafone Fiji Cup has been revitalized with its official launch at the Vodafone headquarters in Tamavua, Suva, marking the tournament’s return after a two-year break. Scheduled to be held from March 13 to 15 at Suva’s FMF Gymnasium, the three-day event features an exciting lineup of 16 teams, consisting of eight men’s and eight women’s squads.
Vodafone’s sponsorship manager, Adriu Vakarau, expressed great enthusiasm about their partnership with Basketball Fiji, wishing all participating teams the best of luck. He suggested the possibility of further competitions this year, including secondary school basketball events, indicating a long-term commitment to the sport.
Basketball Fiji president, Olive Whippy, emphasized the importance of this sponsorship in enhancing both elite performances and community participation in basketball. She praised Vodafone’s efforts in promoting and developing the sport, stating, “I see basketball as the next biggest sport compared to rugby in the country,” which highlights the bright future ahead for basketball in Fiji.
William Peters, the chief operating officer of Basketball Fiji, shared insights about the tournament’s appeal, noting that it will attract competitors from various regions. Fans can expect an accessible entry fee of $5, while children under 12 can attend for free, making it an inviting event for families.
