A recent coordinated effort among the Fiji Revenue and Customs Service (FRCS), the Fiji Police Force, and the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) has led to a successful crackdown on illegal activities. This joint operation, conducted at the Mua-i-Walu port and surrounding carrier stands, revealed significant instances of smuggling.

In a joint statement, the FRCS emphasized that this collaboration facilitates critical sharing of resources and information, which is essential for effective enforcement. During the operation, officials uncovered high-value dutiable goods cleverly concealed within used water bottles, demonstrating the extent to which some individuals and shop owners are willing to go to evade customs regulations.

Moreover, undeclared cigarettes were found onboard a fishing vessel, highlighting further violations of trade laws involving both shop owners and maritime operators. These findings underscore the urgent need to protect Fiji’s supply chains from illegal activities.

Udit Singh, Chief Executive of FRCS, pointed out that the operation reflects the types of illicit actions aimed at circumventing law enforcement. He reiterated the commitment of FRCS and its partners to dismantle these networks and uphold the law.

With the festive season approaching, the FRCS has urged the public to stay alert and report any suspicious behavior. They also reminded businesses to ensure that all their trading activities comply with legal standards to maintain integrity within the market.

This proactive stance not only aims to curtail illegal trade but also fosters a safer and more compliant business environment, ultimately benefiting the community at large. Engaging the public in vigilance can enhance collective efforts against smuggling and promote lawful commerce.
