Francis Puleiwai, the former acting deputy commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), is currently being investigated by the police. The inquiry focuses on allegations that she overstepped her authority as deputy commissioner on a day when the officially appointed FICAC Commissioner, Barbara Malimali, was present in the office.
Acting Commissioner of the Fiji Police Force, Juki Fong Chew, confirmed that a report involving Ms. Puleiwai was received and that he instructed his team to investigate the claims following a complaint from FICAC. Commissioner Malimali has lodged a formal complaint, alleging abuse of office by Ms. Puleiwai.
Ms. Malimali stated, “We have lodged a complaint with the police for abuse of office when she tried to usurp the powers of the Commissioner when the Commissioner had been appointed and was physically in the office.” This matter reportedly originated from an incident on September 5, when Ms. Puleiwai allegedly ordered the arrest and questioning of Ms. Malimali. Subsequently, Ms. Puleiwai resigned from her position that same day.
Upon inquiry, Ms. Puleiwai expressed that she was not aware of any ongoing investigation against her. Following her resignation, she traveled to Australia.
