The Fiji Corrections Services (FCS) has recently conducted a Job Evaluation Exercise (JEE), resulting in the introduction of 81 new positions in administrative, technical, and ranking officer roles. This initiative received Cabinet approval and was supported by Parliament as part of this financial year’s national budget.

Justice Minister Siromi Turaga addressed Parliament, clarifying that traditional notions of promotions and demotions will not be considered in the new structure. He emphasized that any changes in rank will be based on the specific position an officer holds, taking into account their performance and the needs of the organization.

“The restructuring aims to update Human Resources policies and better align job roles with required qualifications and experience,” Mr. Turaga stated. He highlighted that the last JEE was conducted approximately 40 years ago, making this overhaul significant for the organization.

Additionally, the new evaluations have led to the creation of a comprehensive organizational chart that lists job descriptions for various officer roles, which was not available under the previous administration.

This strategic shift not only modernizes the structure of the FCS but also addresses long-standing issues regarding job definitions and pay scales, paving the way for improved efficiency and responsiveness within the service.

In a broader context, this reform could lead to enhanced service delivery and professional development for correctional officers, ultimately benefiting the community they serve.

Summary: The Fiji Corrections Services has initiated a Job Evaluation Exercise to create 81 new positions, modernizing its structure after 40 years. The adjustments will establish clear job descriptions and align compensation with role demands, signaling a positive evolution for the organization and its officers.
