The Fiji Corrections Service has introduced a new policy aimed at enhancing the standards of personal conduct and integrity among its officers and staff. The proposed Personal Conduct and Marital Integrity Policy stresses the importance of maintaining professional and ethical behavior within the service and the duty of all personnel to reflect positively on the FCS.

This policy will outline specific guidelines concerning conduct in marital and committed relationships, particularly aimed at managing behaviors such as extramarital affairs that could tarnish the service’s reputation. It also sets expectations for professional conduct both within and outside of the workplace, recognizing that FCS officers are entrusted with a considerable public trust.

Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa, Commissioner of Corrections, remarked that this policy is a demonstration of the FCS’s continued dedication to professionalism, integrity, and maintaining public confidence. He emphasized that personal integrity is not merely a private concern for FCS staff; rather, it significantly influences public perceptions of the service.

“Maintaining integrity in personal relationships is not just a private matter for FCS staff. It directly impacts how the service is perceived by the public. This policy sends a clear message that we expect our officers to be role models of ethical behavior and to uphold high standards in both their personal lives and their professional responsibilities,” said Dr. Nakarawa.

The Personal Conduct and Marital Integrity Policy will be applicable to all employees of the Fiji Corrections Service and will include support mechanisms, such as counseling services, for those facing personal difficulties. Upon adoption, any breaches of the policy may result in disciplinary actions, which could range from counseling and reprimands to suspension or termination based on the severity of the violation.

The policy is currently under review and will undergo consultations prior to its official implementation.
