Fiji Corrections Service Unveils Controversial Integrity Policy

The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) has unveiled a new Personal Conduct and Marital Integrity Policy designed to enhance the professional standards and integrity of its officers and staff.

This policy emphasizes the importance of maintaining high ethical standards and fostering behavior that supports the organization’s reputation. It will introduce explicit guidelines addressing conduct in marital and committed relationships, particularly aiming to reduce extramarital affairs that could harm the public image of the FCS.

Additionally, the policy will delineate expectations for professional conduct both within and outside the workplace, recognizing the high level of public trust associated with FCS officers.

Commissioner Jalesi Nakarawa highlighted that this initiative demonstrates the service’s ongoing commitment to professionalism, integrity, and earning public confidence. He remarked, “Integrity in personal relationships is not merely a private matter for FCS staff; it directly affects public perception of the service. This policy clearly outlines our expectation that officers must demonstrate ethical behavior in both their personal and professional lives.”

The policy is currently undergoing a review process and will be subject to consultations prior to formal adoption. Once in place, any breaches of the policy could lead to disciplinary actions, which may include counseling, reprimands, suspension, or dismissal, depending on the severity of the misconduct.

Moreover, the policy will provide support mechanisms such as counseling services for employees facing personal difficulties, reinforcing FCS’s commitment to staff welfare while upholding high standards of conduct.

The Personal Conduct and Marital Integrity Policy will be applicable to all FCS employees and will focus on crucial areas such as marital and relationship integrity, professional behavior in the workplace, and the maintenance of a positive public image.
