The Fiji Corrections Service has introduced a proposed policy aimed at enhancing the standards of personal conduct and integrity among its personnel.
The new Personal Conduct and Marital Integrity Policy underscores the significance of upholding professional and ethical standards within the service, highlighting the duty of all staff to exhibit behavior that positively represents the FCS.
This policy will establish clear guidelines regarding conduct in marital and committed relationships, particularly focusing on behaviors such as extramarital affairs that could tarnish the service’s reputation.
Additionally, the policy delineates expectations for maintaining professional behavior both on and off duty, recognizing that FCS officers are held to a high standard of public trust.
Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa, the Commissioner of Corrections, stated that the policy embodies the FCS’s enduring commitment to professionalism, integrity, and public confidence. He emphasized that maintaining integrity in personal relationships is not merely a private concern for staff, as it significantly affects the public perception of the service.
Dr. Nakarawa remarked, “This policy sends a clear message that we expect our officers to be role models of ethical behavior and to uphold high standards in both their personal lives and professional responsibilities.”
The Personal Conduct and Marital Integrity Policy will apply to all employees within the Fiji Corrections Service. It will also include support mechanisms, such as counseling services, for staff facing personal difficulties. Once finalized, any violations of this policy could lead to disciplinary measures, ranging from counseling and reprimands to suspension or termination, depending on the severity of the infraction.
The policy is currently under review and will undergo consultations before its official rollout.
