The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) has recently addressed discussions circulating on social media regarding the early release of former Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama. The FCS clarified that his release is in accordance with established procedures outlined in the Corrections Act, which applies uniformly to all inmates.
In a statement, the FCS explained that Bainimarama’s sentence was calculated with a standard one-third remission that is legally mandated for all prisoners. His one-year sentence has therefore been reduced by four months, setting his release date for early January 2025. The statement emphasized that Bainimarama, like any other inmate, opted to apply for early release, a request which was processed through the established protocols and ultimately granted. He will continue to work during his release while reporting daily to FCS, which will oversee his compliance.
Additionally, the FCS addressed public comparisons between Bainimarama’s situation and past high-profile cases, highlighting that management changes within the FCS have led to a more impartial process currently in place. It was emphasized that Bainimarama’s political background does not influence the legal obligations to provide fair treatment for all inmates.
The FCS reaffirms its commitment to the rule of law and the fair treatment of all prisoners per the Corrections Act, and it urges the public to respect the legal process.
This clarifies that regardless of an individual’s status, the legal system is designed to ensure equitable treatment for all. The FCS’s commitment to transparency and fairness is a hopeful sign that the rule of law will be upheld, which is essential for any functioning democracy. As the nation moves forward, this adherence to legal standards serves as a foundation for maintaining public trust in the justice system.
