Fiji Corrections Service Implements Random Officer Searches: What’s Behind the Move?

All officers of the Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) will undergo random searches as part of an initiative to maintain high standards of security, safety, and integrity within the organization.

Corrections Commissioner Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa emphasized that these random searches are aimed at reinforcing FCS’s commitment to transparency and accountability while ensuring a secure environment free from contraband for both staff and inmates. He stated that this directive applies to all corrections officers, regardless of rank, and is meant to discourage and identify any unauthorized possession of contraband items, including mobile phones, drugs, and other prohibited materials.

Dr. Nakarawa highlighted the FCS’s dedication to preserving the integrity of correctional facilities and noted that this measure reflects their zero-tolerance policy towards any actions that may compromise security. He assured that the random searches would be conducted fairly and transparently, respecting the rights and dignity of all officers while prioritizing the safety of the facilities.

He further explained that the FCS would continue to focus on measures that enhance operational security and maintain public trust in its commitment to law enforcement. The introduction of random searches is among several initiatives being implemented to reinforce institutional integrity and prevent illegal activities within the correctional facilities.

The Fiji Corrections Service is committed to the welfare of all staff and inmates and will work closely with relevant stakeholders to implement policies that promote a secure and rehabilitative environment.
