Fiji Corrections Service Halts Inmate Funeral Attendance: What’s Behind the Decision?

The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) has announced a temporary halt to the practice of allowing inmates to attend the funerals of close relatives. This decision forms part of an ongoing review of all operational policies and procedures to enhance safety, security, and consistency within the services offered by the FCS.

For several years, the FCS has permitted cases of temporary inmate release for attending the funerals of immediate family members as a humanitarian gesture. However, the lack of a formal policy to govern these releases has underscored the necessity for a thorough review.

Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa, Commissioner of Corrections, emphasized the importance of establishing clear and consistent guidelines that balance family considerations with public safety and operational requirements. He remarked, “While we recognize the importance of family and the significant emotional impact of bereavement on inmates, we must have clear, consistent guidelines in place to balance these considerations with public safety, security, and operational requirements.”

The review will aim to clarify eligibility criteria for temporary release on compassionate grounds, ensure the safety and security of both the public and inmates, minimize operational disruptions that such releases might cause, and involve consultations with key stakeholders to align the policy with best practices.

“During this review period, no inmates will be released to attend funerals,” Dr. Nakarawa confirmed.
