The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) has confirmed the arrest of a Corrections Officer Class (COC) caught attempting to smuggle drugs and mobile phones into the Minimum Correction Centre during his second night shift.
During a routine shift change, the officer was found with marijuana, two mobile phones without SIM cards, and an 80 cm roll of suki. He had been under suspicion for potentially collaborating with inmates to smuggle contraband.
On the night of his second shift, the officer brought a bag which he left in the gatekeeper’s room. After being assigned to guard the C dormitory by the Officer in Charge (OC) for the night, he was observed leaving his post around 00:30 hours.
He was seen heading to the segregation block guard room, where he retrieved parcels containing marijuana and suki from his bag, which he then placed in his pockets.
Other officers, who had been monitoring his activities, intercepted him as he attempted to return to his post. Upon searching, they confiscated the contraband and discovered two mobile phones in his bag.
The officer was immediately taken into custody, had his statement recorded, and is currently held at the Emergency Control Unit (ECU) awaiting further investigation and disciplinary proceedings.
The FCS emphasizes its zero-tolerance policy towards misconduct and contraband smuggling, highlighting its commitment to the integrity and security of its correctional facilities. Further updates will be provided as the investigation continues.
