The Commissioner of the Fiji Corrections Service, Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa, has publicly addressed concerns raised by Justice Minister Siromi Turaga regarding potential governance and operational issues within the service. Dr. Nakarawa emphasized that he has not been informed of any specific problems that would necessitate an investigation. He highlighted that, according to the Corrections Act, the Justice Minister does not have the authority to place a Constitutional Officer on leave without proper cause.

In response to the Justice Minister’s statement, which referenced serious incidents and breaches within the Fiji Corrections Service that could affect its integrity, Dr. Nakarawa insisted on the importance of natural justice. He stated that he should be notified of any allegations to allow him an opportunity to address them adequately. He noted that he is currently on leave and received a letter from the Minister indicating the possibility of an inquiry into the service’s operations under Section 22(1) of the Corrections Act. However, he reiterated that he has not been alerted to any issues that would justify such an investigation.

Dr. Nakarawa expressed his intention to prepare a formal response to the Minister’s letter and is considering other pathways to address the situation.

This situation exemplifies the need for transparent communication and processes in governance, especially regarding public service institutions. It is crucial for leaders to have the opportunity to defend their conduct and address concerns head-on to maintain trust and integrity within the system. With open dialogue and adherence to procedural fairness, there is hope for constructive resolution to any underlying issues.

In summary, Dr. Nakarawa is currently responding to allegations he believes he was not adequately informed about and is seeking a fair opportunity to address them while defending the operations of the Fiji Corrections Service.
