The Coral Coast Sevens tournament in Fiji is set to bring back a classic format, as the final will consist of two 10-minute halves, according to Jay Whyte, the Chair and Founder of the Coral Coast Sevens Organising Committee. This change, announced during a media conference, harks back to traditional match durations and aims to enhance the excitement of the final.
Scheduled to run from January 16-18 at Lawaqa Park, the tournament will also feature free entry for fans, making it accessible for everyone who wishes to enjoy the matches. Whyte emphasized the organizers’ goal to create a unique experience that stands out from other competitions by continually innovating and capturing fans’ interest.
The upcoming tournament has generated significant enthusiasm, with team registration for the 2025 event already closed due to overwhelming interest domestically and internationally. Notably, a team from the Caribbean has expressed interest in participating in the 2026 tournament, showcasing the event’s expanding global reach.
The lineup for the 2025 tournament includes 16 youth teams, featuring participants from Sacramento, Nauru Youth, and Sunnybank Australia, among others. The men’s division will showcase 16 teams, divided equally between international and local competitors, promising intense matchups such as those between New Zealand’s top team and Fiji’s iconic squads.
Exciting developments and special announcements are expected soon, hinting at the event’s potential to draw in even larger crowds and create memorable moments for both players and fans.
This year’s tournament not only celebrates rugby but also fosters community spirit by eliminating entry fees, encouraging participation and showcasing the best talent in the region. As anticipation builds, the hope is that the Coral Coast Sevens will provide thrilling matches and a vibrant atmosphere for all attendees.
