The 30th Fiji Oral Health Association Conference underscored the rising need for medical care in light of post-COVID challenges, disease outbreaks, and oral health issues.
Dr. Luisa Cikamatana, the Chief Medical Advisor, pointed out that unhealthy diets and climate change have negatively impacted the health of Pacific peoples.
According to the 2019 Global Burden of Disease Study, oral diseases affect approximately 3.5 billion individuals worldwide, with high sugar consumption linked to diabetes, obesity, and dental cavities.
Dr. Cikamatana emphasized the Government’s dedication to tackling Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) through a multi-sectoral approach.
The budget for 2024-2025 prioritizes community outreach, acknowledging the essential role of dental care providers in responding to pandemics and preparing for future health challenges.
Dr. Mehar Ali, President of the Association, encouraged dentists to pursue further education, noting the ever-evolving nature of dentistry.
She highlighted that the conference serves as a platform for sharing the latest innovations and trends within the field.
This year’s theme, “Cultivating Connections, Communications, and Collaborations,” reflects the significance of teamwork in dentistry.
