The Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission (FHRADC) has issued a strong condemnation of violent actions exhibited by the Fiji Police Force. The Commission views such brutality as a major infringement on human rights and recognizes that it erodes the public’s trust in law enforcement.
In an official statement, the FHRADC emphasized that the police, as protectors of community safety, have a fundamental duty to uphold the law with integrity and professionalism, treating every individual with inherent respect and dignity.
The recent increase in reports regarding alleged police misconduct, including excessive force, is alarming and wholly unacceptable. The Commission has received three complaints relating to these violations, including an incident in Nausori where a bystander was reportedly physically assaulted. Furthermore, there was a situation in the Northern division where an individual allegedly endured a two-week detention that involved physical abuse by officers. Another incident under scrutiny involves claims of force used during a caution interview to extract a confession.
In light of these reports, the Commission is calling for an urgent, independent, and transparent investigation into all allegations of police brutality, insisting that those responsible be held accountable. The need for accountability is deemed essential for restoring public confidence in the justice system and preventing future incidents.
Additionally, the FHRADC urges the Fiji Police Force to enhance their focus on comprehensive human rights training for all officers. This training should underscore the necessity of restraint, de-escalation techniques, and a fundamental respect for human dignity in all police interactions with the public.
This call for accountability and training not only aims to address current grievances but also seeks to foster a more respectful and trusting relationship between the police and the communities they serve. Encouraging positive changes within the police force may pave the way toward a safer and more just society.
Overall, the FHRADC’s commitment to human rights shines a light of hope that through transparency and proper training, the integrity of the police can be restored and strengthened.
