Fiji Champions Youth Development: A Pathway for the Pacific’s Future

Fiji reaffirmed its dedication to youth development in the Pacific during the South Pacific Youth Senior Government Officials meeting held in Nadi. Phillip Hereniko, the director of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, emphasized this year’s theme, “Recommitted to Youth Development in the Pacific,” highlighting the significance of young people in shaping the region’s future.

Hereniko noted that Fiji’s Ministry of Youth and Sports has consistently led youth development initiatives, stating that their commitment goes beyond mere policies and programs; it is a fundamental value ingrained in the nation’s agenda. He outlined various initiatives recently launched by the Ministry, such as the review of youth development policies, the establishment of the National Youth Council of Fiji, and the introduction of The Youth Education Sex App aimed at educating young people about sexual reproductive health services.

He expressed appreciation for the support provided by organizations like UNFPA and UNICEF, underlining the importance of inclusivity in youth development efforts—asserting that all young people should have equal opportunities, regardless of their background, gender, or location.

Hereniko also highlighted the success of youth festivals and symposiums that unite young Fijians from various backgrounds, celebrating diversity and addressing shared aspirations and challenges. As the meeting progresses, he conveyed Fiji’s aim to build on existing achievements, learn from one another, and develop innovative strategies to empower future generations. He emphasized collaboration, resource sharing, and leveraging the unique strengths of each nation to ensure that every young person in the Pacific has the chance to realize their full potential.
