Fiji recently participated in the 15th General Assembly of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week from January 13 to 16, 2025. The country was represented by the Minister for Public Works and Transport, Ro Filipe Tuisawau, who engaged in a significant bilateral meeting with IRENA’s Director General, Francisco La Camera.
During this meeting, Tuisawau reiterated Fiji’s commitment to supporting IRENA’s initiatives aimed at facilitating energy transition, while stressing the specific needs of Pacific Small Island Developing States in discussions on global forums. He highlighted critical challenges posed by climate change, notably rising sea levels and increased cyclone frequency, and emphasized the urgent requirement for enhanced access to renewable energy financing.
The discussions led to an agreement to collaborate through various financing platforms, including the Energy Transition Accelerator Financing and the Small Island Developing States Lighthouses Initiative, to foster renewable energy projects in Fiji, especially in rural areas. This commitment aligns with Fiji’s ambitious goals of achieving over 90% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030 and striving for net-zero emissions by 2050.
Fiji’s proactive participation in this assembly mirrors its ongoing efforts spotlighted in previous forums, such as COP29, where Tuisawau discussed the nation’s transition from fossil fuels to renewables. Currently, roughly 55% of electricity in Fiji is generated from renewable sources, primarily hydropower. Innovations such as implementing floating solar systems on hydropower facilities are being explored to further enhance sustainability and energy access.
In light of the global climate crisis, Fiji’s engagement with IRENA and other international bodies reflects a hopeful narrative, showcasing the pivotal role that collaborative efforts and innovative funding solutions can play in addressing the unique challenges faced by small island nations. Fiji continues to inspire global commitments towards sustainability and climate action, illustrating that significant progress can be made through dedication and international cooperation.
