The Mid-Autumn Festival in Fiji highlights the nation’s diversity and the respect for its Chinese community. Celebrated by the Chinese population, also known as the Moon Festival, this occasion is marked by gratitude and the sharing of joy and prosperity.

During the festivities in Suva, Fiji’s President Wiliame Kotonivere expressed his gratitude to the Chinese farming community, underscoring the strong relations between Fiji and China. He stated, “They have been instrumental in farming our everyday food crops, ensuring that our families have a choice of locally grown vegetables,” while also acknowledging their role in advancing the nation’s agricultural exports.

The festival, which is cherished by the Chinese community in Fiji and around the world, symbolizes the harvest season, family reunions, and a time for thanksgiving.

Mr. Kotonivere noted that the Moon Festival embodies ideals of family, unity, and mutual love. He mentioned, “We are reminded of the importance of these values in our own lives and in our community,” and highlighted that the spirit of the festival reflects the harmony and strength of Fiji’s diverse society.

The Chinese community has played a crucial role in shaping Fiji’s cultural landscape and contributing to its development. “Your traditions, values, and hard work have helped shape Fiji into the vibrant and inclusive nation it is today,” Mr. Kotonivere remarked.

He also reflected on Fiji’s natural beauty, noting the stunning landscapes that enhance celebrations like the Moon Festival. He encouraged attendees to appreciate and commit to preserving the environment for future generations.

Additionally, Mr. Kotonivere emphasized the importance of unity and respect, calling for collective strength during challenging times. He concluded with anticipation for the upcoming celebration of China’s National Day, which will honor the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.
