Fiji Celebrates Korea: A Night of Friendship Aboard ROKS Hansando

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka recently attended a lively celebration of South Korea’s National Day aboard the ROKS Hansando, a Korean naval helicopter training ship docked at Suva Wharf. The event, hosted by the Korean Embassy in Fiji on Thursday night, celebrated the long-standing friendship and diplomatic relations between Fiji and South Korea, which have flourished since 1971.

The ROKS Hansando, carrying a crew of 290, is on a 110-day mission that includes visits to eight countries and ten ports. This visit represents the ship’s eighth stop in Fiji, emblematic of the strong defense and maritime collaboration between the two nations.

During the celebration, Korean Ambassador to Fiji, His Excellency Jin-Hyung Kim, spoke about the deepening bilateral ties across various sectors, including trade, culture, tourism, defense, and security. He expressed appreciation for the presence of guests in honoring Korea’s National Day, even while far from home.

The ship’s deck was transformed into a festive setting, decorated with Korean flags and traditional motifs, providing guests with an array of Korean food, beverages, and cultural performances that highlighted Korea’s rich heritage.

The event concluded with a ceremonial toast from Prime Minister Rabuka and Ambassador Jin-Hyung, signifying the enduring partnership between Fiji and South Korea.

This celebration reflects a positive development in international relations, showcasing cultural exchange and cooperation. The friendship established between these two nations can serve as a beneficial model for future diplomacy and partnerships across the globe.
