Neharika Gambhir, a former student of Saint Joseph Secondary School, has made history by becoming Fiji’s first female analog astronaut. This remarkable achievement comes after a challenging five-year journey in the United States, where Gambhir tirelessly worked at three jobs to support herself while pursuing her dreams.

Currently serving as a Crew Astrobiologist/Data Officer at the Analog Astronaut Training Center in Poland, Gambhir reflects on her arduous yet fulfilling path to this milestone. Her ambition to become an astronaut began at the young age of five when she first gazed at the stars, ignited by a deep fascination with space exploration. Despite facing significant obstacles, including an uncooperative family environment, she persevered, juggling various jobs while earning her qualifications in cyber-engineering and flight studies. Her commitment led her to partake in fellowships with NASA and the International Institute of Astronautical Sciences’ flight test engineering program.

Gambhir acknowledges the unique challenges she faced as a woman in a predominantly male field. The rigorous physical and mental demands of astronaut training, along with the pressures of securing her place in a competitive environment, tested her resilience. However, each challenge proved to be a stepping stone, enhancing her determination and self-confidence.

In her journey, Gambhir aims to inspire other young women in Fiji to pursue unconventional paths instead of conforming to societal norms. She encourages them to embrace their differences and chase their dreams unapologetically, highlighting that the sky is the limit when one dares to dream big.

Neharika Gambhir stands as a beacon of hope and motivation, proving that with hard work and tenacity, it’s possible to transform aspirations into reality. Her journey not only paves the way for future female astronauts but also serves as a testament to the power of resilience and ambition.

As we look up to the stars, Gambhir’s story is a reminder that breaking barriers in any field is achievable, inspiring many to follow in her footsteps.
