Fiji Celebrates Diversity and Unity at Mid-Autumn Festival

The Mid-Autumn Festival in Fiji highlights the nation’s cultural diversity and respect for China. Known also as the Moon Festival, the Chinese community celebrated with expressions of gratitude and joy for shared prosperity.

During the Suva festivities, President Wiliame Kotonivere recognized the contributions of the Chinese farming community. He noted their vital role in cultivating local food crops for families, stating, “They have been instrumental in farming our everyday food crops, ensuring that our families have a choice of locally grown vegetables.” He also commended their efforts in enhancing Fiji’s agricultural exports.

This festival, which is cherished by the Chinese community both in Fiji and internationally, commemorates the harvest season and is a time for family gatherings and thanksgiving. Kotonivere emphasized that the Moon Festival reflects values of family, unity, and mutual love. “We are reminded of the importance of these values in our own lives and in our community,” he said.

He added that the spirit of the festival embodies harmony and completeness, symbolizing the strength of Fiji’s diverse society. The Chinese community has played a crucial role in shaping Fiji’s multicultural identity and enriching its cultural heritage. “Your traditions, values, and hard work have helped shape Fiji into the vibrant and inclusive nation it is today,” Kotonivere remarked.

He also expressed gratitude for Fiji’s natural beauty, from its stunning beaches and clear waters to its lush rainforests and mountains, which provide an idyllic setting for such celebrations. Kotonivere encouraged everyone to appreciate and protect the environment for future generations.

Furthermore, he reflected on the significance of standing in unity and mutual respect, stressing that now more than ever, it is essential to support one another and celebrate the diversity that strengthens Fiji. The Chinese Community in Fiji is also looking forward to celebrating China’s National Day, which commemorates the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.
