Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka spoke to thousands of current and former citizens of Fiji at Mangere Centre Park in Auckland, marking the 54th anniversary of Fiji’s independence.
The event showcased the rich culture and traditional heritage of the Fijian diaspora, featuring a ceremonial welcome for the Prime Minister, along with various traditional and contemporary meke performances.
In his speech, PM Rabuka expressed his appreciation to the organizing committee for their efforts to promote Fiji in New Zealand. He emphasized, “As we gather today to celebrate the 54th anniversary of our nation’s independence, we also recognize the strength of our community here in Aotearoa.”
He commended the diaspora for preserving traditions, promoting languages, and supporting local businesses, acknowledging their vital role in representing Fiji globally. “It is with immense gratitude and pride that I stand before you today, acknowledging the extraordinary contributions of Fijians living in New Zealand. As your Prime Minister, I take this opportunity to thank you most sincerely for your support and commitment to our beloved homeland.”
Rabuka reminded attendees that, despite the distance, they serve as ambassadors for Fiji. “You are ambassadors of our culture, values, and resilience and you continue to showcase the essence of being Fijian,” he stated.
He highlighted the role of the diaspora as a bridge between nations, noting their contributions to both New Zealand and Fiji through remittances, skills, and ideas. “The contributions you make to our economy and society cannot be overstated. Each dollar you send back home supports families, creates opportunities, and contributes to our national economy.”
The Prime Minister also discussed key initiatives of the Coalition Government, including the National Development Plan, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and the newly-released Foreign Policy White Paper, which will shape Fiji’s engagement with partners like New Zealand over the next decade. “As your Prime Minister, I want to assure you that your Government is dedicated to building strong connections with our diaspora. Your voices matter, and we want to hear them,” he added.
As the festivities continued, filled with music, dance, and food, he reminded everyone of their shared identity as part of a larger family united by a love for their homeland. “Together, we will continue to uplift our nation and build a future that reflects the hopes and dreams of all our people,” he concluded.
The event attracted over 5,000 attendees, featuring not only traditional performances but also various food stalls, amusement rides, and information booths.
