Fiji Calls for Urgent USP Council Meeting: What’s at Stake?

Fiji has officially requested the University of the South Pacific Council to hold a Special Council Meeting, which is set to take place later this month.

Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro informed FijiLive that he sent a letter to the USP Council Secretariat following discussions with Minister for Finance Professor Biman Prasad and Minister for Employment Agni Deo Singh. During the meeting, Deputy Prime Minister Viliame Gavoka chaired the session while Radrodro acted as Prime Minister.

Radrodro mentioned that the Secretariat responded with proposed dates in September for the upcoming meeting. While he has yet to meet with the two USP Unions, he acknowledged their concerns and included them in his proposals for the meeting.

“I hope that good sense will prevail in terms of understanding the situation we are in. The University is a regional university and since its headquarters is in Fiji, we are also mindful of the fact that the majority of the staff are Fiji citizens. This is the reason why we are exercising our powers in calling for the Special Council Meeting,” Radrodro stated.
