Fiji Calls for Urgent Special Council Meeting: What’s at Stake?

Fiji has utilized its authority as a member of the University of the South Pacific Council to request a Special Council Meeting, which is now set to take place later this month.

Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro informed FijiLive that he reached out to the USP Council Secretariat after discussing the matter with Minister for Finance Professor Biman Prasad and Minister for Employment Agni Deo Singh. The meeting, which Radrodro attended while acting as Prime Minister, was chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Viliame Gavoka.

He noted that the Secretariat responded with proposed dates for the meeting in September. Radrodro acknowledged that he has yet to meet with the two USP Unions but mentioned that he has considered their concerns as part of the agenda for the upcoming meeting.

“I hope that common sense will prevail in understanding our current situation. The University is a regional institution, and since its headquarters is in Fiji, we are mindful that the majority of the staff are Fijian citizens. This is why we are exercising our powers to convene the Special Council Meeting,” Radrodro stated.
