Fiji has utilized its authority as a member of the University of the South Pacific Council to request the convening of a Special Council Meeting, now set for later this month.
Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro informed FijiLive that he had reached out to the USP Council Secretariat after discussing the matter with Minister for Finance Professor Biman Prasad and Minister for Employment Agni Deo Singh.
Radrodro noted that the meeting was led by Deputy Prime Minister Viliame Gavoka while he served as acting Prime Minister.
He mentioned that the Secretariat responded with proposed dates in September for the meeting.
The Minister acknowledged that he had not yet met with the two USP Unions, but had taken their concerns into account as part of the meeting’s agenda.
“I hope that good sense will prevail in understanding our current situation. The University serves as a regional institution, and with its headquarters in Fiji, we are also aware that the majority of the staff are Fijian citizens. This is why we are exercising our authority to call for the Special Council Meeting,” Radrodro expressed.
