Fiji Calls for Shift to Transformational Climate Financing at COP29

Fiji has appealed to the global community to transition from pilot projects to transformative financing, highlighting the urgent need for consistent and high-quality funding that supports comprehensive long-term national programs. This call was made by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, during the 6th High-Level Ministerial Dialogue on Climate Finance at COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan.

DPM Prasad expressed concerns that the current climate finance approach tends to prioritize small-scale projects and favored partnerships, often sidelining national systems. He criticized the emphasis on funding workshops and studies, arguing that these do not translate into practical investments on the ground.

He remarked, “For Fiji and Small Island Developing States, we cannot address the burden of climate change through small initiatives and fragmented projects. This undermines our ability to protect Fijians and their communities.”

Prasad also voiced his expectations for ambitious outcomes from the conference, stressing that without significant investments and enabling mechanisms, the goals established in the Paris Agreement, including the crucial 1.5°C temperature target, cannot be realistically achieved.
