The Fiji Commerce and Employers Federation (FCEF) is urging all employers in Fiji to prioritize compliance with labor laws to create a fair, safe, and productive working environment for employees. This call for action comes amidst discussions surrounding employment standards, highlighting the importance of adhering to these laws for a harmonious business climate.
The FCEF’s message follows reports of penalties imposed on two construction companies at a resort in Rakiraki due to poor working conditions encountered by their workers. FCEF chief executive Edward Bernard acknowledged that while most businesses in Fiji strive to be responsible employers, it remains critical for all companies to operate within labor law frameworks.
Bernard emphasized that compliance with labor regulations is vital for the welfare of both employees and employers. Following these laws not only safeguards businesses from potential legal issues but also fosters a motivated and engaged workforce.
In response to the need for guidance, the FCEF plans to introduce a series of workshops and informational resources aimed at simplifying labor laws. These initiatives will offer practical strategies for compliance and educate employers and employees—especially migrant workers—about their rights and duties.
