Fiji Bulikula captain Talei Holmes expressed that the players have quickly formed a strong bond during their time together.
“We found a bond already off the field through devotions and team meetings, which is the most important thing,” she stated.
Holmes acknowledged the challenges posed by the Cook Islands team, noting their strength in the middle and the threat posed by full-back Kiana Takairangi around the ruck.
To address these challenges, she emphasized the need to tighten their ruck and bolster their defense. “I have represented the country twice before, and being captain this year is a very special moment for me as I definitely didn’t think this would come this soon,” she added. “I’m very excited and can’t wait to lead the girls.”
Holmes is particularly thrilled to be involved in the Pacific Championship, marking her first visit to the country. “It means so much to me to see the younger generation coming through. It’s amazing and I’m so excited to play in front of them,” she said.
The team is committed to their objective of qualifying for the 2026 Women’s Rugby League World Cup. “It would mean everything to the country if we qualify,” Holmes remarked.
She assured that the team is making the necessary preparations to be ready for their match on Saturday. Holmes recently participated with the Cronulla Sharks, who lost 32-28 to the Sydney Roosters in the NRLW grand final two weeks ago.
In another note, Fetu Samoa will observe as the Bulikula faces off against the Cook Islands Moana on Saturday for a chance to secure a spot in the World Cup qualifying final, having previously defeated Tonga 30-16.
The winner of the Fiji-Cook Islands match will proceed to Auckland to challenge Samoa at Go Media Stadium on November 2, with a World Cup berth at stake. Tonga and the losing team from Saturday night’s match at HFC Stadium will be eliminated from contention. The runner-up in Auckland will later compete in the World Series in 2025 for the eighth and final spot in the RLWC2026. Additionally, the victor in Auckland will meet the third-placed Pacific Cup team at CommBank Stadium on November 10 for a chance to gain promotion to the top tier next year.
