Fiji Bulikula captain Talei Holmes expressed that the team has forged a strong bond in their short time together. “We found a bond already off the field through devotions and team meetings, which is the most important thing,” she remarked.

Holmes noted the strength of the Cook Islands team, especially highlighting full-back Kiana Takairangi as a potential threat around the ruck. She emphasized the necessity to tighten their ruck and enhance their defense.

Having represented Fiji twice before, Holmes considers her role as captain this year a significant milestone. “I’m very excited and can’t wait to lead the girls,” she added. This campaign for the Pacific Championship holds special meaning for her as it is her first time in the country.

“It means so much to me seeing the younger generation coming through. It’s amazing, and I’m so excited to play in front of them,” Holmes stated. The team is taking their upcoming challenge seriously, aiming to qualify for the 2026 Women’s Rugby League World Cup. “It would mean everything to the country if we qualify,” she said.

Ahead of their match, Holmes mentioned that the team is preparing thoroughly to be ready for Saturday. She recently played for the Cronulla Sharks, who lost to the Sydney Roosters in the NRLW grand final by a narrow margin of 32-28.

On another note, Fetu Samoa will be watching as the Fiji Bulikula faces off against the Cook Islands Moana on Saturday for a chance to secure a spot in the World Cup qualifying final, following their victory over Tonga that ended 30-16.

The winner of the Fiji-Cook Islands match will head to Auckland to face Samoa at Go Media Stadium on November 2, with a place in the World Cup at stake. Tonga and the losing team from Saturday’s match at HFC Stadium will be eliminated from contention. The runner-up in Auckland will still have a chance to secure a spot in the 2025 World Series for the eighth and final berth at the RLWC2026. Additionally, the winner in Auckland will compete against the third-placed team from the Pacific Cup at CommBank Stadium on November 10 for a chance at promotion to the top tier next year.
