A flash flood alert has been issued for all low-lying and flash flood-prone areas of Viti Levu, as warned by the Fiji Meteorological Service (FijiMet).
In an update provided last night, FijiMet indicated that a low-pressure trough is situated just south of the islands, resulting in overcast weather across much of the nation.
Additionally, another low-pressure trough is approaching, expected to bring further clouds and rain, impacting the islands starting today.
The weather service cautioned about the potential for localized flooding on roads, iris crossings, and low water bridges.
The National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) has advised communities in the Yasawa and Mamanuca Groups, as well as Viti Levu, Kadavu, and nearby smaller islands such as Moala and the Southern Lau Group, to remain alert and adhere strictly to safety advisories issued by authorities.
The NDMO emphasized that flash flooding is likely in low-lying areas due to the anticipated heavy rains and urged the public to avoid crossing or swimming in flooded rivers, streams, drains, roads, and walkways where water levels are above knee height.
Additionally, a strong wind warning has been implemented for the land areas of Kadavu and nearby smaller islands, as well as the Yasawa and Mamanuca waters, southwest Viti Levu, and the Kadavu passage.
