Fiji Amateur Boxing is intensifying its preparations for significant upcoming competitions, including the Pacific Mini Games and the Commonwealth Games, as emphasized by head coach Cam Todd. Following a recent tour to the USA, where Todd and his team engaged in fights against a variety of international opponents, the need for such experiences has become clear. Although the team didn’t secure wins in their bouts, the valuable competitive exposure has resulted in noticeable improvements among the boxers.
“The primary goal of that trip was to enhance the experiences of my elite boxers and ensure they gain the necessary bouts to progress,” Todd explained, highlighting the particular development seen in younger boxers.
The team is also gearing up for a Men’s and Women’s Championship scheduled for September and has plans for another tour to Australia next month. The ongoing commitment to training and international competition reflects a proactive approach to not only improve performance but also to build confidence ahead of major events.
The overall development of Fiji’s boxing scene is encouraged by recent successes, such as notable achievements by younger athletes and an increase in female participation in the sport, which has grown from just a couple of boxers to between 15 and 20. This signifies a shift towards inclusivity and nurturing local talent.
In line with past progress, such as Jone Davule’s historic gold medal win at the 2023 Pacific Games, the current momentum showcases the dedication and potential within Fiji’s boxing community. With strong support and ongoing training, there is optimism that Fijian boxers are poised to make their mark on the international stage. The focus on youth development and inclusivity is cultivating a promising future, ensuring that the boxing culture in Fiji continues to flourish.
