Two heavyweight boxers have had their boxing licenses suspended for four months by the Boxing Commission of Fiji, following a controversial incident that took place during a match on Saturday at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka. Minister of Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru expressed his disappointment over the situation and called for swift action after witnessing the events unfold.
BCF chairman Adi Narayan described the incident as a disgrace to the sport during a press conference. He emphasized his concern regarding the behavior of the experienced athletes involved. “Minister Saukuru took time from his busy schedule to attend the meeting, showing the seriousness of this issue,” Narayan stated. He added that the Ministry would not accept misconduct in professional boxing, particularly from those who are champions.
The boxers involved, Fiji heavyweight champion James ‘The Beast’ Singh and Semi Dauloloma, are set to face a suspension after consultations with the Minister of Sports. Both fighters will not be able to compete for the next four months, with the aim of allowing them to return renewed in 2025. Narayan underscored that the suspension serves as a warning to all boxers in the sport.
During the match, trouble started when Singh punched Dauloloma while the latter was on the mat. In their third meeting, Singh was knocked down in the first round, and a scuffle ensued in the second round that culminated in both boxers falling to the canvas. In a melee while being separated by the referee, Singh struck Dauloloma while on the ground, leading to further chaos as ring officials intervened to avoid escalating violence. The match was ultimately called off and ruled a no-contest.
Despite the incident, Singh retains his title as the champion.
