The Boxing Commission of Fiji has temporarily suspended the license of the South Pacific Boxing Promotion (SPBP) and its promoter, Fredy Chand. This decision comes after a thorough investigation into the tragic case of Ubayd Haider, a well-known local boxer who passed away.

Eroni Loganimoce, a member of the BCF board, stated that the suspension was prompted by Chand’s failure to comply with various agreements established between the promotion and the commission. Concerns regarding the wellbeing of boxers associated with the promotion were highlighted, alongside a lack of cooperation from the promoter.

Loganimoce emphasized the commission’s commitment to ensuring the safety of boxers in Fiji. He noted that measures are being implemented to prevent incidents similar to Haider’s from happening in the future. The suspension of SPBP and Fredy Chand’s license took effect on Friday, November 29.

This suspension serves as a crucial step towards prioritizing the athletes’ safety and well-being in the boxing community, underlining the importance of accountability among promoters. Many hope that these actions will lead to improved standards and practices within the sport, ultimately protecting the lives and careers of upcoming boxers.
