Keleto Takele, a boxer representing the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF), secured a gold medal by defeating his fellow soldier Rusiate Qalo in the 57–60kg category during the Vodafone Ratu Sukuna Bowl boxing final held at the LICI Court in Suva. Despite Takele’s victory, the overall boxing competition was claimed by the Fiji Police.

In expressing his gratitude for the win, Takele acknowledged the difficulties faced during their month-long preparation. “I’m glad that I pushed through the challenges with a determined spirit,” he stated, highlighting the event’s importance as a prestigious contest between the RFMF and Fiji Police Force.

Takele shared insights into the rigorous training regime, which included early morning runs and a strict diet, particularly challenging for the lighter weight boxers. The win was dedicated to his family and the army officers who supported him at camp.

This marks Takele’s first year in boxing, with the Suva match being his seventh since joining the Army Boxing Club. He also emphasized the misconceptions about the sport, noting that boxing embodies discipline, focus, humility, and determination.

In a positive call to action, Takele encouraged young people to consider boxing not just as a competitive sport but also as a means of self-defense and a way to maintain fitness.

The success of Takele encapsulates the spirit of perseverance, showcasing how dedication and hard work can lead to triumph, inspiring both aspiring athletes and the wider community.

This story not only highlights a personal achievement but also reinforces the values of resilience and discipline within the sporting community.
