Fiji Revenue and Customs recently celebrated the arrival of advanced drug detection equipment, which includes one TruNarc and two FirstDefender units, during a ceremony at Suva Wharf. This initiative has been spearheaded by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Pacific and funded by the Japanese government, with the primary goal of safeguarding Fiji’s borders from the influx and illegal exportation of narcotics and hazardous substances.
With comprehensive training on the operation of this equipment, border officials will now be able to swiftly identify and classify drugs without the lengthy wait for lab test results. Minister for Home Affairs and Immigration, Pio Tikoduadua, emphasized the significance of these tools in enhancing border security, noting their ability to scan and identify narcotics without necessitating the opening of packages. This function not only ensures the preservation of evidence but also reduces the risks associated with physical handling.
Japan’s government, alarmed by the rising drug incidents in Fiji, referenced a recent large-scale drug raid in Spain as a call to action. The operation, which was reported to be the second-largest anti-narcotics initiative within the European Union, sparked concerns about the prevalence of drug-related issues globally, including an unexplained association with Fiji in the seized packages.
UNDP Pacific has highlighted that such measures serve as a catalyst for communities to remain vigilant against drug threats, as they increasingly affect the wellbeing of families and livelihoods. The urgency of the situation emphasizes the need for a collaborative effort beyond individual actions.
Fiji Revenue and Customs is hopeful that these new tools will contribute significantly to the fight against drug offenses, ultimately ensuring a safer environment for its citizens. This initiative represents a proactive step toward strengthening national security and protecting the future of the Fijian people.
Overall, the introduction of this equipment marks a positive development in Fiji’s ongoing battle against drug-related threats, showcasing the nation’s commitment to maintaining the safety and integrity of its borders.
