Fiji has welcomed its newest Guardian-class patrol boat, the RFNS Timo, a valuable gift from Australia that further solidifies the strong relationship between the two nations. The formal handover took place in Perth, attended by Fiji’s Minister for Home Affairs, Pio Tikoduadua, along with Permanent Secretary Mason Smith and Deputy RFMF Commander Humphrey Tawake.

During the ceremony, Minister Tikoduadua expressed his heartfelt appreciation for this addition to Fiji’s maritime fleet, noting its crucial role in enhancing the nation’s abilities to secure its waters, protect its natural resources, and support regional security. He emphasized the significance of Australia’s support in this matter.

The RFNS Timo replaces the previously decommissioned RFNS Puamau, filling a gap in Fiji’s maritime operations. Initially intended for Timor-Leste, the vessel was renamed Timo to honor Able Seaman Timo Puamau, a Fijian soldier who lost his life during World War II. The RFNS Timo will complement the RFNS Savenaca (401), another Guardian-class vessel named in memory of a Fijian WWII sailor, as part of an initiative to boost Fiji’s maritime security and protect its borders while ensuring sustainable management of its natural resources.

This handover marks a significant milestone in Australia’s Guardian-class Patrol Boat Programme, which recently delivered its 21st vessel to Tuvalu, with plans for a total of 24 vessels. Tikoduadua highlighted that this gift symbolizes the profound partnership and mutual dedication shared by Fiji and Australia.

This collaboration is a hopeful signal for both nations, demonstrating commitment to regional stability and enhanced security measures. The strengthening of Fiji’s maritime capabilities through such gestures can lead to significant improvements in resource management and protection of the marine environment.

In summary, the arrival of the RFNS Timo is a powerful indication of the ongoing commitment of Australia and Fiji to uphold maritime security and environmental stewardship in the region.
