Fiji has proudly welcomed its newest Guardian-class patrol boat, RFNS Timo, a significant gift from Australia that emphasizes the strong and enduring relationship between the two nations. This moment was marked by a ceremony held in Perth, where Fiji’s Minister for Home Affairs, Pio Tikoduadua, along with Permanent Secretary Mason Smith and Deputy RFMF Commander Humphrey Tawake, expressed their sincere appreciation for this support.

Minister Tikoduadua highlighted the importance of this vessel in enhancing Fiji’s maritime capabilities. “This remarkable addition to our maritime fleet strengthens our ability to safeguard Fiji’s waters, protect our natural resources, and uphold regional security,” he said on X, conveying gratitude towards Australia for its invaluable assistance.

The state-of-the-art RFNS Timo replaces the previously decommissioned RFNS Puamau, addressing a critical gap in Fiji’s maritime operations. Originally intended for Timor-Leste, the vessel was renamed Timo to honor Able Seaman Timo Puamau, a Fijian sailor who tragically lost his life during World War II. This connection to history adds a poignant significance to its commissioning.

RFNS Timo joins another Guardian-class vessel, RFNS Savenaca (401), which is similarly named in memory of a Fijian World War II sailor. Together, these vessels bolster Fiji’s maritime security, border protection, and preservation of natural resources.

The handover of RFNS Timo is part of Australia’s Guardian-class Patrol Boat Programme, which recently celebrated the delivery of its 21st vessel to Tuvalu, with a total of 24 vessels planned for deployment.

“This gift symbolises the deep partnership and shared commitment between Fiji and Australia,” Tikoduadua remarked, underscoring the long-standing ties of camaraderie and cooperation that continue to develop between the two nations.

This initiative not only enhances Fiji’s maritime security capabilities but also serves as a reminder of the collaborative efforts between countries in the Pacific, fostering goodwill and mutual support in facing shared challenges.

In summary, the acquisition of RFNS Timo represents a positive step for Fiji in strengthening its maritime defenses and is a testament to the fruitful partnership with Australia. This collaboration is a hopeful indicator of future endeavors to ensure peace and security in the region.
