The 2024 Fiji Bitter Malake 7s wrapped up successfully on Saturday at Narauyaba ground in Ra, concluding an exciting three-day tournament.
This annual event has become a highly anticipated part of the rugby season, featuring fierce competition among local talent across various divisions and attracting crowds from the surrounding areas.
Tournament coordinator Isoa Tute expressed his happiness with the event’s outcome, noting the substantial growth of the Malake 7s over the past three years. “The tournament was a success; we can say it ended the way we expected,” Tute remarked. He explained that while the first year was challenging due to expenses, the support from major sponsor Fiji Bitter in subsequent years has been crucial for the tournament’s evolution.
In addition to the rugby matches, the tournament provided economic advantages to the community, with numerous local food stalls operational during the event. Tute noted that all food vendors had sold out by the end of the second and final day, highlighting that the tournament not only celebrates rugby but also bolsters local businesses and fosters community engagement. “The support from the community was heartening, and it showed how important this tournament has become for everyone, from players to vendors,” he added.
On the pitch, the defending champions Police Blues once again displayed their prowess in the men’s division, successfully defending their title and impressing their dedicated fans with dominant performances throughout the tournament. Blue Gas Lilian claimed the championship title, showcasing their strength against formidable rivals.
In the U21 division, Village Boys emerged victorious, emphasizing the promising talent coming up in Fijian rugby. Tute believes the Malake 7s serves as an essential platform for young athletes. “This tournament benefits young talent; it’s an opportunity for them to develop and showcase their skills,” he said.
The Fiji Bitter Malake 7s is increasingly influential in nurturing young athletes, with its positive effects on both youth and the local community becoming more clear. As the event concludes at Narauyaba ground, it is evident that the Fiji Bitter Malake 7s has achieved more than just sporting triumphs. It has fortified community ties, delivered economic benefits, and highlighted Fiji’s emerging rugby talent, solidifying its status as a significant event in the local sports calendar.
