Hundreds of people gathered at the FMF Gymnasium in Suva yesterday to pay their respects to Ubayd Haider, Fiji’s super featherweight and lightweight boxing champion. Notable attendees included Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru, Deputy Speaker of Parliament Lenora Qereqeretabua, and several members of the boxing community, family, and friends.

Haider, who died late on Sunday, had been in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Lautoka Aspen Hospital for over two weeks. He fainted shortly after his TKO defeat to Australia’s Runqi Zhou on October 26 during an International Boxing Association (IBO) Asia Pacific Super Featherweight title fight.

Expressing his condolences from Canada, SPBP director Mohammed Shameem remarked on Haider’s kindness, strength, and significant contributions to boxing in Fiji. He emphasized the lasting impact Haider had on the sport and the invaluable lessons his life taught others.

Haider’s older brother, Sebastian Singh, thanked everyone for their support following Ubayd’s hospitalization. He mentioned that despite feeling unwell in the days leading up to the fight, Haider showed tremendous spirit and determination. Sebastian claimed his brother was encouraged to fight against his wishes, calling attention to the pressures athletes often face.

Messages of sympathies poured in, including from former sports superstar Sonny Bill Williams. Mohammed Iliyas, who brought Williams to Fiji, described Haider’s passing as a significant loss for Fiji boxing. Iliyas also supported Haider’s family during their difficult time.

Minister Saukuru assured the Singh family that a thorough investigation would take place to uncover the circumstances surrounding Haider’s passing. Veteran trainer John Ramos also sent his condolences from Canada. Haider was laid to rest at the Raralevu Cemetery in Tailevu.

Haider’s legacy as a champion and a role model made a mark that will not be forgotten. While his untimely death is a tragic loss, the community’s outpouring of support serves as a testament to the impact he had on many lives, fostering hope in the unity and resilience of those he inspired.

This gathering not only commemorates Haider’s achievements in boxing but also highlights the importance of mental and physical well-being in sports, encouraging future discussions on athlete health and safety.
